"I'll Never Honey Once more" is a song from the 2018 moving picture A Star Is Born, performed past its stars Lady Gaga and managing director Bradley Cooper whose character sings the terminal chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the song including the extended version that featured Gaga every bit the sole performer. Gaga wrote the vocal with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

The song has received widespread disquisitional acclaim and has reached the top of the Slovakian digital charts, the height-x of the record charts in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Hellenic republic, combined-Europe, Luxembourg and Kingdom of spain. "I'll Never Love Again" received a contemporary striking radio release in France as the album's third single on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Award for Best Vocal Written for Visual Media, a year after the anthology's pb single "Shallow" won in the same category.

Groundwork and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting set to picture show the final scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Love Once again", the singer got a telephone telephone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her last moments of Stage IV cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to meet Durham, but she arrived ten minutes afterwards her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "Y'all've gotta do what Sonja would want you to do", so she returned to the fix. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga's loss simply Gaga was adamant about finishing the scene, so she stepped on the set and sang "I'll Never Love Once again". The singer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that day and I took information technology with me to [the] set up, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an hour."[1]

Along with the moving-picture show version, the soundtrack also contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[2] [3] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The song is performed in the primal of Chiliad major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in common time. It follows a chord progression of Gadd2–Em7–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Gadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/E–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga'south vocals span from K3 to Ev.[5] Brian Truitt of USA Today described the vocal equally a "weepy" ballad.[6]

Release and performance [edit]

The vocal was first chosen as the tertiary single from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in France, where it was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[vii] After soundtrack release, the vocal debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United states of america[eight] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the land, while accumulating 66 million streams.[9] Additionally, the vocal has reached the top ten position in Republic of hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the elevation 10 of digital charts in Greece, Espana and Grand duchy of luxembourg, reaching the nautical chart summit in Slovakia.

Disquisitional reception [edit]

The song received universal acclaim. In her review of the motion-picture show, Melina Newman of Billboard called the ballad "stunning".[10] The mag's Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's operation of "I'll Never Beloved Over again" as the moving picture's all-time scene and wrote, "Not just are the lyrics devastatingly cute, just Gaga/Ally showcases her full, skyscraper-loftier range."[11] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson's "Without You" and Eric Carmen's "All past Myself", and complimented Gaga's "onetime-school finesse, timing, emotionality and lung power".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice called the song a "stunning, centre-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Love Again' is plenty constructive on its own, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its final seconds the aforementioned style the film does: jumping back in time from Gaga's time-stopping performance to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that merely enhances the song's emotional quotient".[13]

In his film review, Ty Burr of The Boston Globe said Gaga's "climactic memorial" operation of the song "will leave y'all a soggy mess whether you like it or not".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an University Honor nomination for Best Original Song.[fifteen] USA Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Again,' the film's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her own Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about dearest and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It's a transcendent achievement that could single-handedly net the vocalist-turned-actress her get-go Oscar, reminding the states yet once again that she'southward i of the best vocalists right now in any genre, pop or otherwise."[16]
